Drink Local: Holiday Cocktails

It’s always a good time to Drink Local. This holiday season there are many local options with which to craft your holiday cocktails and mocktails. This morning I will be making an appearance on NBC’s Charlotte Today to share six delicious ways to Drink Local, each one with a myriad of variations on the theme.

Here is a quick preview of everything I’ll share on the televised segment and then later today or tomorrow morning, I’ll repost with all the detes, the where to buy info, recipes and the video from Charlotte Today as well.

To get the post as soon as it hits, I suggest you sign up to follow me at HeidiBillottoFood by entering your email in the space at the top right hand corner of my home page. That way, the complete Drink Local post and lots of other holiday fun this month will come right to your inbox as soon as it goes live.

The intent was indeed for the televised segment promoting this post to air on Dec 6, but sometimes things don’t always go according to plan. The show was preempted by President Bush’s funeral.
We wound up taping the show and now the segment will appear on  Dec 19! I’ll be here to remind you to tune in and will post the bigger post on that same day. Meanwhile check out this fun shot from the taping ; and be on the lookout for a new series of cocktail posts – a different one up each… stay tuned for more delicious ways to drink local this year and next!

drink local

Lots of local dairies to choose from with milk products available in and around the Charlotte area.  Today the spotlight is on Homestead Creamery in Wirtz, Virginia. Available in glass bottles – which you may return for a deposit – Homestead regularly offers cream top milk, homogenized milk, buttermilk and chocolate milk. For the holiday season you can also drink local with their eggnog and  egg cream. The heavy cream is available year round as well and you’ll want to use it to top everything! Homestead Products are available at Whole Foods, EarthFare and several small farmers market stores in and around Mooresville, NC.

Drink Local with White Rum, Amber Rum and a unique Rum au Cafe from Lassiter Rum in Knightdale, NC

drink local

Three different varieties of Lassiter Rum, afford you the occasion to drink local in a number of ways. In addition to all your favorite classic rum cocktails, I suggest you use the Amber rum or the coffee infused rum to spike your eggnog and if you’ve a want to cook local, the Rum au Cafe also makes a mean marinade for the next  local steak or burger you’re gonna  toss on the grill, just sayin’…

Drink Local with Krupnikas Honey Spiced Liqueur and the Cranberry holiday version of the same

drink local

The Brothers Vilgalys Spirits Company in Durham NC was the first to produce Krupnikas in the U.S. Its a deliciously unique traditional Lithuanian liqueur and this season they upped the game with a cranberry version of the age old recipe. Sip over ice, drizzle over desserts or use to spice up your next cocktail blend.

Drink Local with Windy Hill Orchard Apple Cider, Hard Cider, Wassail, and Apple Cider Vinegar from York, SC

Drink Local

While South Carolina’s Windy Hill orchard makes fruit flavored spring, summer and fall variations of their hard cider with local peaches, blueberries and strawberries, these three blends are their signature hard cider pours. Taste for yourself at the farm’s Cider bar every week till Christmas, Thursday – Sunday.

Windy Hill Orchards also offers several non-alcoholic ways to Drink Local in the guise of fresh pressed cider, spiced wassail and apple cider vinegar too! Make a tasty drink called “Switchel” with one cup of water, a tablespoon of Windy Hill Farms Apple Cider Vinegar and a squeeze of lime. Serve over ice and enjoy! And did I mention there are fried apple pies and apple cider donuts on the weekends?

Drink Local with Defiant Whisky and Rye from Bostic NC

drink local

“And good ole boys are drinking whisky and rye….”  The secret to fine whisky is in the water and that’s why the Blue Ridge Distilling Company set up shop in Bostic NC. They dig deep for the pure mountain water and age in oak to give the Defiant whisky and rye the distinctive difference.

If you are looking for a wonderful seasonal sip, may I suggest you combine a splash ( or two) of your choice of Defiant whisky or rye with the Homestead Creamery egg cream ( which tastes like a melted vanilla milk shake) or the eggnog, a nutmeggy spiced version with less egg and more cream. Either of the rich dairy products is the perfect foil for the warm toasty taste of Defiant.
